Reflection of Denny Chimes
Jeffrey Bryant Hanson, 2017

In his capacity as the Head of Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology, and Counseling (ESPRMC) at the University of Alabama (UA) College of Education, Dr. Rick Houser, now retired, founded what is now called SUGRS in 2009. In the beginning, SUGRS was a departmental symposium designed to help its students with the conference and presentation process. Three professors made up the original committee: Dr. Sara Childers (Ohio State), Dr. Cecil Robinson (UA CCHS, Director of Learning & Evaluation), and Dr. Ann Godfrey (retired). That first year, 12 students participated in the symposium, and it was a success! It grew as more and more students from the department became involved.

In 2012, Dr. Stacy Hughey Surman joined the committee. 2013 saw the symposium expanding to incorporate the entire College of Education. Dr. Surman became the committee chair in 2014 and worked with Dr. Aaron Kuntz (Florida International University) who took over from Dr. Houser. Through their hard work, and with invaluable support from UA’s Graduate School, they opened the symposium up to the entire university. By 2017, students from every college at UA participated, with numerous scholarship opportunities available.

The symposium was renamed the Southeastern Universities Graduate Research Symposium, or SUGRS for short, in 2018/2019 when, with the help of Dr. Michael Lawson (ESPRMC Department Chair) and Dr. Stephanie Shelton (ESPRMC professor), the event became regional, encompassing Auburn University as a partner university. Since then, the University of Georgia at Athens, Baylor University (Texas), and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville joined SUGRS as additional partner schools.

We look forward to continuing these partnerships and developing new ones in the years to come!
