Dr. Surman is the current Director of the Southeastern Universities Graduate Research Symposium (SUGRS).

Stacy Hughey Surman, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Educational Research in the Department of Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology & Counseling in the College of Education at The University of Alabama. She received her Ph. D. from The University of Alabama in 2010 and holds Class A Teacher Certification in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. She teaches in the area of educational research and is currently teaching courses focused on classroom and large-scale assessment, program evaluation, data-driven decision making, psychometrics, research methodology, survey research methods, and statistics.

Dr. Surman serves as the Assessment Coordinator for the Educational Studies Department, Program Coordinator for the Educational Research Department, Director of the Southeastern Universities Graduate Research Symposium, and Chair of the Academic Issues Committee of the College of Education. Her community and academic service, and research agenda, is focused on teacher self-efficacy, classroom assessment development and use, and equitable access to arts education – building on the rich cultural and artistic history of underserved communities as a way of bridging the gaps and building community support and positive community outcomes.
